Tara and Bella

Posted on 03 November 2011 by Cathy

When elephants retire to a sanctuary they usually bond with another elephant to live out their final days. Tara the elephant and Bella the dog were an unusual pair and inseparable for the past 8 years. They did everything together including eating, drinking, sleeping and playing together. Even when Bella got a spinal cord injury, for three weeks Tara held vigil outside the building where Bella was being cared for.

Bella passed away last week after most likely being attacked by coyotes. Her friend Tara carried her body back to the barn where they spent much of time together. Since Bella has been buried Tara has gone back several times to visit the grave. Here is a video about their friendship that was put together in 2009

When Surya the orangutan met Roscoe the stray hound dog the two became best friends

When Owen a baby hippo was orphaned after the 2004 tsunami, he took up with Mzee who is a giant tortoise and 130 years old. They have their own website here:

Cassie the kitten was abandoned by someone who threw her into a backyard. She was so small the homeowners thought she was a rat. Moses the crow  took her under her wing and began taking care of her. Moses would pull up grubs and stick her beak into Cassie’s mouth to feed her.

Sierra was adopted by Sushi when her mother rejected her. Sierra is a tiger and Sushi is a mini pincher. Watch their relationship here

A Blind Dog and Her Friend

Posted on 27 October 2011 by Cathy

As the mother of a blind child anytime I hear a story related to blindness it touches me. Yesterday I found out about a blind dog named lily and her guide dog Maddison.  Both are in need of a home. The manager of Dogs Trust Shrewsbury UK Louise Campbell has stated she has been inundated by over 200 callers in since the story about the dogs first aired. They have been at this location since July where people would just walk by lily and Maddison’s cage. Perhaps they were intimidated by taking care of 2 large dogs?

When Lily was a puppy she had a disease called entropion which causes the eyelashes to grow inwards. The condition forced the vet to remove her eyes thus leaving her blind. After the surgery a dog named Maddison developed a special relationship with Lily. They have been best buddies and inseparable for the last 5 years. Maddison actually acts as Lily’s seeing eye dog so these two are a package that should not be separated. Even with all of the calls they have not yet gone to their forever home.

I have tried to locate Lily and Maddison but it seems the dog trust has removed their pictures and information from the website. Perhaps they feel that they have had enough interest to find a suitable home.

Couple dies together holding hands

Posted on 19 October 2011 by Cathy

You hear about stories like this on the news from time to time. A couple who loved each other so much in life that they could not be apart even through death. I have always been fascinated by this. As a nurse I have witnessed this for myself several times. It is more common than you think  for one spouse to die and the other one will follow not too far away.

One study showed you are at least 30 percent more likely to die of any cause in the first six months following a spouse’s death. Another study found the bereaved spouse’s risk of death during those first six months rose by up to 50 percent!

Is it a broken heart? Is it a lack care? One of my favorite movies “Somewhere In Time” starring Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour shows this type of love. The movie was about a man who went back in time and met a woman with whom he fell passionately in love with. They were plotting their life together when he saw a penny that propelled him back into the correct time frame. He tries to find his love and learns that she has already passed away. he fell into depression where he was unable to continue doing anything without her being right by his side. He winds up sitting in a chair unable to do anything until he passes away. The movie then shows them meeting back up together in the afterlife. I love this movie! Now let me share this true life love story with you.

Gordon and Norma got married the same day she graduated from high school in 1939 and they spent 72 years together. On this fateful day however, they were separated in different rooms of the ER. They were sent to these separate rooms because of an accident that happened at an intersection. This event took place last week on Highway 30 and Jessup Avenue west of Marshalltown, Iowa. Gordon Yeager,94 was driving with his wife Norma, 90 had just left the house on their way into town. For unknown reasons Gordon failed to yield to an oncoming vehicle.  The approaching car tried to avoid the inevitable accident but just couldn’t do it.

Both Gordon and Norma were hurt in the accident where they were taken to the ER. Even though they were both hurt and had their own personal pain they were more concerned about the other rather than themselves. When the staff realized they were not getting any better they decided to move them into the same room. They put them in the intensive care unit so they would be able to comfort each other while they received care. The beds were placed side by side and through the bars of their hospital beds they were able to hold hands.

Gordon passed away an hour before his wife did. The monitors were still hooked up to Gordon even though he had passed. The family noticed it looked like his heart was still beating even though he had stopped breathing. Then they realized he was actually transmitting his wife’s heartbeat through his body as if it were his own through their hands.

Gordon used to say all the time a good woman is worth waiting for so he only had to wait one hour for his sweetheart to begin to spend an eternity together. The family stated they did everything together in life and so it seems right they go out together as well. The family decided that Norma and Gordon should stay together for the funeral as well so they placed them together in one casket where they could continue to be together holding hands. Family also stated that they will be cremated and they would mix their ashes together.

Today is your 18th birthday! I just cannot believe how fast time flies. I also cannot believe I am now the mother of 2 adults. How is it that I only have one more child left to cross into adulthood? Jordan will be turning 15 in a few weeks so I have a little more time before she is where you are right now. I want you to know I am so proud of you and always have been. I remember the day you were born like it was yesterday. You were born into the world as an old soul always wanting to take charge and act like an adult. You are smart, funny, caring, energetic, curious, sweet, enigmatic and many other things. I know as you move through life you will always carry these qualities with you and you family will always be behind you.

Fire Became Personal

Fire Became Personal

Posted on 28 September 2011 by Cathy

The fires raging in Texas over this summer became personal in June. There was a raging forest fire by my house in Spring, Texas which is a suburb of Houston. I remember early in the day smelling smoke and trying to figure where it was coming from. Once I was able to spot the fire I knew it wasn’t going to be good. I started going in and out of the house trying to figure out if it was still going on. I didn’t know if I needed to leave. The day got windy where ash kept blowing past me.

That fire endangered around 200 homes in my neighborhood. The fire was estimated to be around 50 acres in size. It started in the area behind Gloria Marshall Elementary School. Officials evacuated residents from my neighborhood around 3:20 p.m on Friday June 17th, 2011. First United Methodist Church in Humble was used as a shelter for those displaced by the fire. We decided to just hang in the cars.

The Texas Forestry Service reported that the fire started around 10 a.m. It began as a 3-acre fire but grew over the course of the day. Firefighters were having trouble containing the blaze due to lack of humidity, heat and dry vegetation in the area. They battled the fire with extra help from helicopters and a plane. I heard they dropped 200 gallons of water at a time! Then three tractors plowed through the area to help as well to keep it from starting back up again.

The evacuation notice was lifted later that same evening. We went home to find everything was fine. We were lucky that they were able to stop it before we lost anything. We had another fire on September 5th which was farther away but close to home. We did not have to evacuate that time. The Waller fire burned more than 10,500 acres and destroyed more than 76 structures which included 60 homes. While I am very fortunate that I still have my home I feel really bad for those that lost everything.

In my pictures you can see the helicopters flying over and the plane.

Justice for Zahra Baker

Justice for Zahra Baker

Posted on 15 September 2011 by Cathy

She finally admitted it! Zahra Baker’s stepmom, Elisa Baker finally admitted she killed her. She just plead guilty in a Catawba County courtroom today to second degree murder in the death and dismemberment of her disabled North Carolina stepdaughter. She also plead guilty to charges of obstruction of justice and bigamy. Elisa Baker stated that on the day the child died she found Zahra unresponsive. It was Sept. 24, 2010 and she tried to perform CPR before calling Adam Baker. She will now serve 14 to 18 years in prison. As far as the father Adam Baker goes he was found to not be involved in his daughter’s death or dismemberment. Phone records prove she was lying to him about his daughter being alive. They also prove he was at work while she was getting rid of the body as well. Investigators never did found Zahra’s head, hands, right arm, upper left leg or her lower right leg. This case has always been very sad to me. I hope the family now has some sense of closure as they begin a new chapter of their life. As for many of us we will never forget Zahra

School Fire

Posted on 14 September 2011 by Cathy

Spring High School had an electrical fire this morning which cancelled classes. I didn’t hear anything about this until after my son came home from school and told me himself. I turned on the TV couldn’t find anything about it on the local television stations. So I did what any internet addicted person would do and went online. Social media sites have now become one of the best places to hear about breaking news anyway. I found out that a fire broke out in the school’s main electrical panel first around 8 a.m. The fire forced the school shut down the power. My son as well as everyone else was made to go to the football field until they could be transported home. Why did they send the kids who drove to school there to the field? They said in the articles I read that the school had notified the parents so they could come pick up their kids. I was never notified! Why? I also heard Cypresswood Drive and I-45 was shut down until the fire department cleared the scene. Since this school year started Cypresswood is at a crawl/standstill anyway. There has not been anything reported about what damage the fire did. Also at the moment they don’t know when school will be back in session. I wonder how long it will take to fix? Maybe I should put him to work in the yard today!

Unstoppable 2010

Posted on 26 August 2011 by Cathy

Last Friday after a long day playing with computer code I thought it might be nice to watch something to try to unwind. So I turn on the TV in the bedroom and find Unstoppable which I had not yet seen. It had already been going on for a bit but I thought I could catch that part of the movie at a later time. Besides I wanted to just watch for the tiniest little bit where I could stop thinking about code. I remembered that the movie had been filmed in one of my childhood towns called Bellaire, Ohio. My friend Linda had sent me pictures of the filming that she took from her house. I knew some of the places to watch for. So I settle down and started watching hoping the code in my mind would be gone in a bit. Guess what happened? I got caught up where I could not turn it off. I watched it until the very end! OMG why did I do this to myself? Well the train was not going to stop and it had an interesting play between the characters. Denzel was in his element where I enjoy watching him. His character was the sincere good guy. Of course I was also noticing the parts of the movie where Bellaire was.

Now I was wound up tight ready for action. I was waiting for the trail to derail. My adrenaline had been flowing as I watched. Now how was I going to go to sleep? This movie reminded me of the movie Speed. I was waiting for the bus in this movie to run out of gas, crash and explode. I also had watched Speed late and was awake all night with my mind racing. I finally shut down on Friday around 5 am. The movie should come with a caution tape around it and something saying beware this movie is prone to make you feel like you just drank a pot of coffee. Nope I can actually drink a pot of coffee before bed.

Have I told you yet about the Denzel look-a-like at my Walmart? I walked up to him years ago and told him how much he looked like Denzel. He could be his brother. One of these days I am going to get his picture and post it but for now I will leave you with this picture of a distant stunt Denzel
